How long is the first visit?
Plan on 45 minutes to an hour for your first visit in our office.
What can I expect during the first visit?
Of, course there will the usual new patient paperwork that you can download from this page. The information in the paper work is a great starting point for Dr. Carr to determine what you have experienced in the past and what is ailing you now. You will have a consultation with Dr. Carr to determine if your case if a chiropractic one. Once it is decided by the doctor that chiropractic treatment is appropriate for your condition, a thorough exam and an adjustment will be done. If during the first exam Dr. Carr determines additional tests are needed before treatment is done an adjustment may not be done until your second visit. All of your treatment options will be discussed with you during your visit, and questions are always welcome.
Do you take x-rays of all your new patients?
No, x-rays are only taken if Dr. Carr with his 30 years of experience determines they are needed in order to treat your condition more effectively. There are many reasons why we would not take x-rays on certain patients including pregnancy, most children, recent usable spinal x-rays and some other various situations.
What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems of the body and the effects of these disorders on a person's overall general health. Doctors of Chiropractic practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient
examination, diagnosis and treatment. They also have broad diagnostic skills and are trained to
recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and
lifestyle counseling.
The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as an "adjustment," also called a "chiropractic manipulation." The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile-or restricted in their movement- as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses such as sitting or sleeping in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.
Chiropractors will readily refer patients to the appropriate health care provider when chiropractic care is not suitable for the patient's condition, or the condition warrants co-management in conjunction with other members of your health care team.
If you start chiropractic care, do you have to go the rest of your life?
We know that getting regular chiropractic adjustments can help you live a healthier, more productive life. So yes, we think all our patients should be under regular chiropractic care and regular is different for each individual. Our philosophy is that it is always better to "stay well" than have to "get well" and just like regular dental care keeps your smile looking its best, regular chiropractic care will help keep your body functioning at its best.
After your initial visit with the doctor he will recommend a treatment plan that he feels will get you back to optimal health. It is your responsibility after hearing the recommendation to decide how far you want to take your chiropractic health journey. Whatever your health goals are, we are here to help you.
Can I be adjusted if I am pregnant and is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?
Please don't suffer through your pregnancy with back pain, headaches, leg pains, etc. Despite what you may have heard from your mom, your aunts, your cousins, these are not "normal" symptoms of being pregnant. Regular chiropractic care during your pregnancy can alleviate or greatly relieve all or most of these aggravations so that you can enjoy your pregnancy not just suffer through it.
A chiropractor is trained to understand the mechanical and physical aspects of what may be causing unnecessary pain or discomfort during your pregnancy, and getting adjusted while pregnant is completely safe. Chiropractors are trained to alter their regular treatment as needed during pregnancy, following surgery, or when other conditions warrant it. Dr. Carr has a chiropractic adjusting table specifically designed for treating women who are pregnant.
